Balancing teaching and research roles-A need of an hour

Balancing teaching and research roles-A need of an hour
Today’s Academic scenario is leaning towards more of administrative work less of educational and research. The teaching fraternity are more involved in administration then academic and research. It’s become common for the teachers to experience a tug-of-war between their teaching and research responsibilities. Academic excellence requires considerable time dedicated for quality research; however in today’s scenario, teaching and other administrative tasks remain the first goal for faculty.

In the Indian education scenario, there are UGC norms for recruitment, pay scale and increments, but they're only confined to government institutions, many of the private institutions follow their own internal appraisal system for faculty and importance is given more to the faculty members involved in student activities & promotional aspects. Student feedback at departmental and institutional levels is additionally a criterion for gauging teachers

Research and Teaching fields both demand your energy. Teaching is more associated with reading and referring more books from different authors and theories and. Most of the time, thanks to high competitive demands from Academic arena, research is isolated. So faculty may follow a agreement of 80:20 Teaching: Research work ratio and Align your research the maximum amount as possible with some a part of your teaching. Socialize at lunch time with colleagues who can potentially help your work. Use your master’s students to develop papers supported their curriculum subjects and reward them with marks; also you'll change your method of delivery and appearance for changes, both qualitative and quantitative. Examples may include Activity Based Learning/Action Learning, Gamification, Case-Based Learning, use of the Flipped Classroom approach, to call just a couple of. It depends on the topic matter but there's always scope and opportunity to experiment.

So as an educator with lot of challenges in today’s academic scenario, we've to require research as top responsibility to satisfy future demands of teaching & learning and check out to bring transformations, but not at the value of teaching or other related activities during which students require supervision and guidance.
